How to create a project in ArcGIS Pro

  • Click the Map tab below the New Project heading.

  • Set a name and choose a location for the project, then click OK.

  • A new folder will be created.

How to open a project in ArcGIS Pro

  • Double-click to open the new project folder.

  • Double-click the file with the .aprx extension.

  • This will open ArcGIS Pro.

How to transfer project across computers

  • Ensure you are using the same version of ArcGIS Pro on both computers.

  • Transfer the entire project folder, including all its contents, to the other computer.

    • Do not copy only the aprx file.

Why need the whole folder?

  • ImportLog: A folder that contains XML files storing log messages.

  • Index: A folder that contains map thumbnails and keeps track of items stored in the project file.

  • .gdb: A geodatabase where data is stored by default.

  • .aprx: An ArcGIS project file that contains maps and print layouts.

  • .atbx: The default toolbox.

  • Additional folders or files may be created when certain operations or tasks are performed in the project.
